Electric Tools for Your Organic Garden

Posted by admin on Oct 26, 2009 under vegetable garden organic

What kind of tools do you use in your organic garden? Of course, I think hand tools are the best type of tool to use, but who wants to cut a hedge that is 6′ tall and 40′ long with a pair of hand clippers? I know I wouldn’t want to. So, when I do use a motorized tool, I try to make sure its electric. Electric tools are quieter and produce no emissions.

Electric tools that require an electric cord are lighter and are easier to carry. There only drawback is that the cord can be a nuisance and if you have a large organic garden, you will need a lot of cord.

Cordless electric tools have a battery attached to them This makes them heavier and they often have to be recharged. I always try to buy an extra battery. These batteries have potentially harmful heavy metals in them such as cadmium, silver, mercury, and lithium. Be careful when disposing of these batteries and check with local authorities on the proper disposal technique in your area.

Electric tillers, pruners, trimmers, diggers, chainsaws, lawn mowers and a host of other equipment is avilable for your organic garden in todays market. The Neuton Electric Lawn Mower is a good example. It has almost a cult following. It is extremely light and easy to use. You can cut grass for almost one hour before having to recharge it. The Neutron was one of the first electric lawn mowers and has been around for a decade.

Robotic lawn mowers are the up and coming tool. While they have been around for almost 10 years, they have pretty much been a novelty item because of the problems with battery life. But, technology is changing, and improvements have been made to extend battery life. Who knows, before long you may have a robotic lawn mower mowing the grass around your organic garden. Liquid Organic Fertilizer

Posted by admin on Dec 6, 2008 under vegetable garden organic

Using liquid organic fertilizer is a great way to provide your organic garden with a safe and effective way to provide them nutrients without harming them or increasing the acidity level in the soil. Liquid organic fertilizers act as agents to effectively increase the content levels of nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium. These are the three major nutrients that plants need. Liquid organic fertilizers thus provide plants with an abundant food supply essential for their growth. Liquid organic fertilizers are especially important in helping the plants overcome the tension involved in transplanting, cold weather, or dry season. Because liquid organic fertilizers help enrich the soil, they assist in removing the risk of soil nutrient-deficiency.

You can apply liquid organic fertilizer either by spraying or direct application to the soil. Spraying is the most common method because plants can absorb the nutrients quickly through absorption through the leaves and stems The other method used for applying liquid organic fertilizers are called direct or tea application. Liquid organic fertilizer direct application is like adding tea to the soil around the plant. Liquid organic fertilizer direct application still has the same nutritional component as the spray type. The only difference is that with the liquid organic fertilizer direct application method, nutrients such as nitrogen and potash may be wasted because they are not easily absorbed by the plants.

The most common liquid organic fertilizer is fish emulsion. Made from ground up and liquefied fish parts, fish emulsion liquid organic fertilizer contains trace elements essential for plant growth. Fish emulsion liquid organic fertilizer also has high content level of nitrogen, the nitrate source for plants. Fish emulsion liquid organic fertilizer may be sprayed on the plant’s foliage or applied directly as tea. Earthworm castings can also be made into liquid organic fertilizer. Earthworms are so important. They are a major reason why scientists have made an industry out of earthworm castings. Bat guano is another type of liquid fertilizer used in an organic garden. Other manufacturers have made liquid organic fertilizers out of: fish meal, soybean protein extract, rock phosphate, bone ash, potasium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, sea kelp, and humic acid.
