Slug That Beer

Posted by admin on Jun 17, 2009 under organic gardening how to

Did you know that slimy slugs like beer more than any alcoholic? Slugs are attracted to beer and will consume so much of the “barley pop” that they will eventually fall in and drown. This is a quick and easy organic gardening how to.

I have used two different types of beer traps for slugs. Both work, just be sure to place the traps in your garden where the slugs will find them on their way to your garden (and remember, slugs are most active at night):

1. Pour 1 inch of beer into a small plastic cup (such as an old margarine cup). Dig a small hole in your garden large enough for the bottom of the cup and deep enough so that only about 1/2″ of the cups rim is protruding above the ground. Place your cup in this hole and your trap is set. You will need to check your trap and empty it out every-other-day until your slugs are under control.

2. Pour 1/2 cup of beer into a pint-sized plastic bottle. Place this bottle on its side in an area where slugs have been seen. Make sure the mouth of the jar is only about 1/2″ from ground level, or you may have to form a small hole in the ground for the jar to fit into. Empty and re-bait these traps every 2-3 days until the slugs are under conrol.

Here is a short video confirming how well these beer traps work:
