What’s The Big Deal About Organic Foods?

Posted by admin on Dec 28, 2010 under organic foods

Organic foods are grown naturally and the industry is closely regulated in the United States. Naturally grown means that the food is grown and produced without pesticides, fertilizers, food additives, sewage sluge, and/or radiation. Organic foods are not genetically modified.

Organic farms are very productive. So, one might ask, why are organic foods more expensive than conventional foods?

That’s because the U.S. government does not subsidize organic farming unlike conventional farms. Lobbyists from the huge conventional farming industry have managed to keep these subsidies away from the organic farming industry.

Have you ever wondered why the American public is growing so much taller? Or, why American’s are gaining so much weight? Could it have something to do with what Americans are eating?

Watch these two Organic Gardening How To videos and I think you will find the answer:

PART 1

PART 2

I believe the answers to the questions asked above is answered in these two videos. Americans are slowly ingesting the same fertilizers and additives that conventional farmers are using to make their livestock and crops grow faster and bigger. Slowly, Americans are changing – and not for the better.

So, should you quit buying conventional foods and start buying the more expensive organic foods? Only you can answer that. You have to decide if you want to trade you and your family’s health and fitness for a more expensive product.

If you choose to go organic, you can buy organic foods in a number of large organic grocery stores such as Earth Fare and Whole Foods Market. And there are many smaller stores. Go to Organic Store Locator and you can find a list of all the grocery stores near you that sell organic foods.

Or, buy online. Try Shop Organic.

Until next time…

Organic Garden Newspaper Pots

Posted by admin on Dec 7, 2010 under organic garden
I recently saw a cool video about making containers for seedlings using newspaper. It’s simple to do and I thought the kids would have fun doing this, but then I started having some concern for my organic garden. Is newspaper and the ink on it harmful to my organic soil?

After some research, I found that 95% of newspapers use a soy based ink. I also found that the paper itself is made from 70-80% of ground wood pulp and that the remaining percentage is made from pulp that has been bleached. Most manufacturers use a bleach made from hydrogen peroxide versus chlorine.

Read this article from the Newspaper Association of America to learn more.

So, for those organic gardeners that are reading this blog, if you’re strict about your organic methods, you may not want to make these containers for your organic garden from newspaper. The containers are not “Pure Organic”.

I know, I decided not to do this in my garden. But, many who read my blog are not “Pure Organic” gardeners and I thought many of them would like this video.

So, go ahead and watch – it is a clever idea:

At the very least, contact your newspaper printing office and discuss with them the characteristics of the paper and the ink that they use in their publications. Newspaper pots are not for every organic garden.
